Renesas has widely provided various microcontroller products, which have been widely used, for many years. Renesas provides some of these functions as IP products, so that users keep the usability of these microcontrollers in various devices or forms for a long time. Customers can use not only fixed-function devices but also use the intellectual properties of microcontroller product to expand and customize the functions. So, they can continue to use their properties with optimal functions and in optimal devices beyond general-purpose devices.

Features

Renesas “Processor IPs” are provided as follows:

  • Proven in Renesas microcontroller and microprocessor products
  • As a “CPU subsystem” that packages the functions required for system configuration
  • As a soft macro

Renesas delivers various subsystems including 8-bit to 32-bit and small to large scale, to meet diverse needs. It makes it possible to realize user original devices.
Note: The subsystem configuration depends on each IP.

Development tools of the processor IP program, including IDE and emulators, are common with Renesas’s microcontroller and microprocessor products. In addition, customers can use various software for them such as OS

Common with Renesas General-purpose Products

Renesas processor IPs are developed for Renesas microcontrollers and system on chip products. For Renesas devices, Renesas and third parties have provided many and various utilities including development tools, software supports, etc. for many years. You can not only use Renesas processor IPs but also these utilities and the know-how that are involved in them. Users who already use Renesas devices, as well as first-time users, can use Renesas IPs to utilize various assets comparable to general-purpose devices.

Original Microcontrollers

The user's original microcontroller using processor IP brings the following merits.

  • Optimization
It is possible to standardize multiple microcontrollers and integrate user functions into a single chip. The standardization and integration make it possible to reduce the number of parts and to utilize facile inventory and other management. It is possible to fix the usage of microcontrollers such as pin functions by hardware without initial setting by software. It is also possible to implement critical processing in hardware in order to speed it up.
  • Using assets of Renesas microcontroller products
You can use your existing software assets, which were developed for Renesas microcontroller products, with Renesas processor an FPGA microcontroller are same as the products. You can also use software such as drivers provided for Renesas microcontroller products.
  • Reuse and maintenance
You can retain the combination of hardware (IP) and software in order to keep its development quality and to use it for a long term. It is easy to port the combination in the best device or to use a subset of that for each system.

Implementation in Application-specific LSIs

Implementation of processor IPs in application-specific LSIs brings the following merits.

  • Small size
Soft macro IPs can be used in various processes. Users can select the most suitable process for their LSIs including a processor IP. Users who used application-specific LSIs and a microcontroller can integrate them into a single chip and reduce their size.
  • Convenience due to microcontroller or software control
Microcontroller or software control utilizes facile system control, such as detecting the status of the target system and setting its mode of the LSI. It also utilizes easy tuning, such as setting parameters for each target system. Implementing new functions in software makes it easy to develop a new system and to change the functions after its development. Mechanical control can be also performed with built-in timers.
Note: There are differences in the merits depending on each IP.

System Development using FPGAs

Implementation of Renesas processor IPs on FPGAs makes it possible to develop PoC, early and preliminary system evaluation, and develop prototype including software. Mass productions with FPGAs are increasing, which makes it possible to flexibly change specifications and add functions. For such customers who develop systems using FPGAs, we deliver FPGA microcontrollers that support analog input and output using FPGA resources and external devices, with the same register interface with general-purpose microcontrollers, and an FPGA microcontroller supports an extended interface to add peripheral functions. Customers who use FPGAs and microcontrollers can integrate their functions in a single FPGA on which processor IP is implemented.
