光电烟雾探测器由一个红外光电二极管（发射器）和一个光电晶体管（接收器/探测器）组成，安装在所谓的“小白盒”内。 空气在盒子内流动，而空气中可能含有来自附近（早期）明火的烟雾，等等。
”小白盒“的结构可防止（日）光进入盒子，以免干扰测量。 由于发射器和探测器都位于 ~120 至 150 度的角度，因此光线不会在未受污染或“低污染”的空气中照射到传感器。 但是，如果（例如，由于烟雾或灰尘）盒子中的空气含有颗粒，光会散射，有些光会照射到探测器，从而触发声音警报（压电喇叭、蜂鸣器）。
